A New Project

Thought I'd take a few minutes this morning to share this new project that I've started. I saw this Be Attitudes quilt by Nancy Halverson,

last summer and knew right away that I'd have to make it someday. I ordered a few copies of the book for the shop and decided to start on mine last week. I'm enjoying it very much! Another project to add to my pile. Hope to finish this one right away! lol

I hope you've all had a wonderful Christmas season and wish you all a happy and healthy New Year!

Winter Wonderland

We are having quite the winter here and it's still fall! lol But I don't mind it at all as winter is my favourite season!

We were blessed last night to be able to enjoy a walk through the woods! Some of our cousins from my Dad's side of the family own a horse farm nearby and each year they host a candlelit walk along a 2 mile trail in the woods. At the end of the trail is an old sugar shack where our uncle used to make tons of maple syrup. They served hot chocolate and hot apple cider for us there alongside a beautiful bonfire!

It was a great night to appreciate God's beauty and have a little visit with family!

Checking In

Busy, busy! Work, Christmas cantata, shopping, etc! You know all about it, I'm sure. Just wanted to check in to say hi and show you a couple of fun things. Gail, my right hand man at the shop, was busy this week, whipping up this little cutie that was in a previous issue of Primitive Quilt and Projects.

And I spent some quality quilting time over the weekend working up a few more of these babies. Almost done with these colours, then on to the dark blues!

And a little trimming at home!

Wooly Wednesdays!

If you live in this area, you might want to get in on this little bit of fun. I'm hosting Wooly Wednesdays at the shop on Wednesday mornings from 9:30 - 12:00noon. Kaaren from the Painted Quilt is going to be there each Wednesday morning to inspire and share her beautiful work. Approximately once a month, we'll have an original design ready to share with you in kit form. For those living out of this area, you could also get the kits by mail. We start Wednesday, Dec 11th. There is limited space for the workshops, so if you think you might want to join us, let me know. You can call the shop at 902-378-7845 or email me at dadeon@eastlink.ca

Snow Pail and Gifts

I've had a bit more sewing time again this week, love that! I got these cute little patterns by Sweetwater in at the shop for this Snow Pail and just had to give one a whirl. They make up quickly and for only $2.99 for the pattern, you can't go wrong. The first batch has sold out already and there are more on their way to me now. They have a great line of fun patterns if you're interested in checking them out.

I've also been making a couple of Christmas gifts. I'll post pictures of them when they're finished. Thanks for stopping by, I'll try to post again in the next few days!

Busy, Busy!

I've been busy, but it's a good busy! I'm enjoying the life of shopkeeper very much! One thing that amazes me is how fast the time goes by! Never a dull moment, that's for sure!

Yesterday I was able to sew for a bit. On Tuesday we had our first sew-in at the shop, Kaaren, Gail, Deanna, Debra, Lisa, my mom and myself had a great time together sewing and sharing! Kaaren shared some pictures on her blog. I worked on that black, red and tan free blog pattern from Lisa Bongean that I had started last year. The blocks were finished and it just needed to be put together and have borders added. So yesterday afternoon, I was able to finish it. Can't wait to see it quilted!

I was also able to finish this little cutie by Kim Diehl.

I'm having fun, stop by if you're in the area to see!

We're Open For Business!!!

Yup, we did it!! We opened the shop on November 1st. It was lots of work, and of course, thousands of last minute things that had to be done. But when we opened the doors on Friday morning at 9am, we were so pleased to have shoppers waiting outside. The weather was not on our side, with high winds and heavy rain, I thought some people might decide it was best to wait until another day, but we were so pleased with how many of you made the trip to see us!!

Thursday night, my hubby and I were there quite late, putting on the finishing touches. Once he got the sign on the front of the building, I had to take a picture. It was raining and dark, but just couldn't wait any longer.
One of the best things about the two days, was getting to meet some of you! Several ladies from around the province made their way here to be a part of my big day! Thank you so much.

And I've been promising pictures of the shop, so here are a few. My daughter was here to help us out on Saturday, as an artist, she gets shots from a much different perspective than what I think to do, so these are her shots from yesterday. Hope you enjoy the pics, get inspired or even better, I hope you decide to get in the car and come see me!! Be sure to introduce yourself if you do!! :)

Home From Retreat!

Oh my, I'm absolutely exhausted!! LOL I've been quilting with Kaaren, Debra, Gail and Rose since Wednesday evening. I got home yesterday afternoon, and have been trying to catch up on my rest ever since. I think I'm finally feeling a little like myself tonight. We had a great time, lots of laughing, lots of great food, some good heart to hearts and not a lot of rest! Did I mention the laughing?? Oh my, there was a lot of that. I had to leave for a bit on Thursday afternoon, and while I was gone, I thought to myself, this probably isn't a good thing, hard to tell what the others might get into while I'm away. Oh yeah, not good, they certainly took advantage of that time to set up a few pranks for me. All I can say is, I'll never see a Kit Kat bar in the same light again in my life!! lol All good, lots of fun!

So I took a few pics, but they were taken with my phone, so not the greatest quality, I forgot my camera once again!

Along with the pranking and laughing, we did get lots of sewing done.

                                                   Kaaren's applique projects

                                                         Gail's Flying Geese

                                                        Rose's Star Happy

Debra's take on my mystery quilt

                                               Kaaren's Ollie came to visit

And a couple of the things that I worked on, a lot of little things for the shop.

Speaking of the shop, there's only four more days until the opening, it'll be a busy week I'm sure. If you're in the area, I hope you're able to visit!

I'm planning some fun things for the fall and winter for the shop. One is a trunk show by a wonderful quilter from Amherst, Nova Scotia. I've never been to a trunk show before, but have seen lots of pictures from bloggers all over blogland. Looks like lots of fun. I would love to hear some suggestions for the trunk show, and some ideas of what to include in the day from those of you who've had trunk show experience.

Just had to share!

My friend, Kaaren from the Painted Quilt, dropped in to the shop for a visit this morning! She's lending me some of her beautiful quilts to display in the shop. She had a stack of them on the counter, and as we went through them, there was this treasure about two from the bottom!!

Oh my, it's absolutely awesome! She and our friend Debra, made this beauty for me! I'm so thrilled! The picture just doesn't do it justice, I wish you could see it in person! Kaaren designed to reflect the shop logo and she ROCKED it! Thank you so much Kaaren andDeb, it means the world to me.

I'm so blessed with great friends. Gail has been helping almost every day to get things ready for opening, my mom has been there cleaning, organizing and quilting, her husband Terry has been doing some electrical work, Rose has come to help paint and give suggestions and of course there's been my hubby, working like a crazy man to get things ready! I know there are others too, my sister, my Aunt Linda and Uncle Vernon and so many that have offered this and that, and leant a few things! It's all coming together! Less than two weeks!

A Sewing Day!

Things are coming together nicely at the shop. There's a few more things on hubby's to do list but I can see the end in site! Today, I stayed at the shop all day, waiting for deliveries. Let me tell ya, when you get a big ol' box of sewing supplies in and go through them all, checking things out, it's right up there with Christmas! LOL!

So today was a sewing day, not much that I could do today other than that. I've been working on this other Kim Diehl one. I can't remember what it's called though. You know, I just can't get enough of her stuff. I'm actually thinking about starting a Kim Diehl club at the shop. Have you made any Kim Diehl quilts? I've got two on the go right now, this one needs the borders, then the little wool melons added and it'll be ready for quilting!

A Little Stitching

All of my sewing recently has been for the shop. I'm not complaining, I'm enjoying every minute of it. It's actually part of my "work" day. Gotta love that!!

Wool for quilts is something that is not often found in these parts of the Maritime provinces. From what I've been able to find, there are no quilt shops in NS that carry felted wool so any quilters that want to use it, buy it at the rug hooking shops, which are also few and far between or they buy it in clothing at the second hand shops and felt it themselves. So, in the many orders that will be coming into the shop in the next few days, there will be lots of felted wool. I can't wait to see it.

Sewww, I've been busy working on a few wool projects for display. I love working with it, I've chosen to do handwork with mine, I love the quiet time at the end of a busy day but you could also do machine appliqué with it. This piece is from the Kim Diehl book Simply Charms, just one of many that I hope to be able to make. If you haven't tried wool on cotton appliqué, try it, please, you'll be glad you did!

Remember These!

You remember back in July, Temecula Quilt Shop did a challenge for the month, and I just had to try these little babies!

The blocks were finished in August but they've been just sitting there waiting for me to do something with them ever since. Needless to say, I've been busy, but I was really hoping to have these ready for the shop when it opens. So, today it's a flimsy!! And I love it!! I added a couple of coins for perspective, the blocks finish at 2".

And...I'm old school sewing today! My "new" machine is in for it's one year checkup! My back up machine, which is around 18 years old, is definitely not backing me up. Can't believe I sewed with that thing for so many years and thought it was a great machine! Sewwww, today I'm using the old cheapy Kenmore that is around 25 years old and it's doing a much better job. Sounds like a train going through the house, but at least it's sewing!! Complete with an old Belle sticker compliments of little BJ, from way back when. Makes me smile!

Shop Samples

I've been busy! Getting things ready, painting, cleaning, sewing (yes, that's the best part). And shopping, from wholesalers this time, for stock!! Oh my, it's lots of fun!

For me, what makes a really great shop is lots of samples to oooh and ahhh over. So, I'm sewing, cutting, playing with fabrics, hoping to get lots ready to share with you. And some of my quilting girlfriends are helping out with that also. Kaaren, from The Painted Quilt, has graciously offered to lend me some of her beautiful wool on cotton quilts for display. Isn't that awesome! If you've ever had the opportunity to see Kaaren's work up close and personal, you know that I am over the moon happy about this offer. Her work is absolutely stunning and I have the privilege of having it hang in my shop!! Can't wait!

I'm working on a Kim Diehl design myself this week. I've been wanting to do this one since the book first came out, and figured now was the perfect time. Can't wait to see this one in the shop! It's easily one of my favourites of Kim's. Hard to pick a favourite really, because I love them all. But this one has been speaking to me since day 1. So, last night and this morning I got all of the little melons cut. And now to start some piecing!

Hope you're having some sewing time today too!

Thought you might...

.....like to see this! My girl has been busy helping her mama out a little bit! Our logo is done, business cards are ordered, cheques are ordered and yesterday, we went on a road trip and brought home a truck load of fabric and batts!! Woohoo, that was fun! Stay tuned!

I'm on a mission....

..to find items for my shop. I'm planning to sell wool for appliqué in the shop, I know of no other quilt shop in this province that carries it and I know it would be a big hit. Now there is a rug hooking shop about 20 minutes so that's where I've bought my wool over the past couple of years.

I think what they carry is called Dorr Wool. I don't know much about purchasing wool to sell, what brand I should or should not look for, etc. So, I would love to get some feedback on this if you have an opinion!

My Shop!

Just wanted to share with you the name that I've chosen for my shop. Kaaren from The Painted Quilt suggested it, and it was just too cute to pass on. "A Needle Pulling Thread" is under construction! It probably won't officially open until November 1st but as of today it has a Facebook page. If you're on Facebook and would like to check us out, you can find us here. Please drop on over and "like" and "share" the page! I'll have pictures to share in a few days!

Huge News!!

Some of you might remember the post I made here, about working in the quilt industry! Well I've taken the plunge, gave my two week notice at my job yesterday and plan to be opening a shop of my own in the fall. It's a huge step, and I'm crazy excited, nervous, freaked out and scared all rolled into one!

It will start small, but I hope it will grow and become a gathering place for so many others who love this craft as much as I do.

Today, I'm struggling with a name. I thought I had that all covered but because of what the province charges to do a name search, I really need to have one in mind that isn't similar to anything else in the province before I submit one. So, any suggestions would be welcome!

I'll keep you posted with more details as things come together!

Visiting and Pennies!

Oh my, my sweet girl and her hubby made an unexpected visit home late last night and I was up well beyond midnight visiting! It was so nice to see them! And it was lots of fun to surprise my mom with them this morning! We all had lunch at her place after church, and spent the afternoon together there enjoying each other's company!

Tonight, there's not a lot of energy to spare, so I'm snuggled into my lazy girl chair, watching the Hobbit with hubby and trying my hand at some wool pennies! This is a first for me, I don't even know for sure if I'm going about it the right way, but I think they're pretty darn cute and I'm enjoying the hand work!

A New Addition!

Our family, well our extended family, is gonna have a new addition in November. My niece is expecting a little boy and tonight we are going to shower her with baby goodies. It should be fun! Lots of fun gifts, good food and tons of laughs I'm sure! lol

I wanted to make her a quilt, but decided to wait until after the baby was born just in case it wasn't a boy! But then earlier this week, I thought it would be more fun to share the quilt at the shower, so on Wednesday, I got busy and got it started. I saw one like this somewhere on the internet, can't remember where now, and so I apologize for not giving credit where credit is due. And I know mine isn't exact but it's similar! I hope she loves it! It's not quilted, and not even appliquéd yet, and I want to add the baby's name to it before we quilt it. And I was afraid to do that now, you never know, the name may change several times between now and when he's actually born. So she won't have the quilt when he's born, but shortly there after!

Happy Baby Shower, Jenna! Love you!

Time flies!!

Wow, it's hard to believe that it's the first of September already! The summer has gone by in a whirl! It's been such a busy summer, haven't had time to even think too much about it really! I'm hoping things will slow down a bit for me now, but I say that every season and it never seems to works lol.

Today was a lazy day for me. We went to church, and then in to my mom's for a quick lunch. Then home to spend some time in my lazy girl chair, watch the tube, and stitch some hexies! Perfect way to spend a day in my opinion! Thought I'd show you the progress on the hexie borders, I've made my way around one corner. It's show going when you don't have much time to devote to it, but slow and steady wins the race, eventually it'll be finished!

Beautiful Weekend!

Hubby and I packed up the trailer on Friday and headed to the woods to our friend's cottage. Friend Gail and I sewed and relaxed while the guys did guy things, walked in the woods, checked out all the gadgets on the new trailer, I guess that's relaxing for them too! The weather was perfect, two beautiful sunsets and the lake covered with mist both mornings. I didn't get a picture of the mist, I was snuggled in too nicely to bother with the camera!

As for sewing, Gail is working on a scrappy TATW and I finally had the chance to try some Thangles. I have been looking for them around here for months with no luck, so finally had to order online. I think they're a great product and was impressed with how quickly I had a large stack of HSTs ready to go. When I have the finished they'll be the next border on the lighthouse quilt that I shared with you way back when! It's finally time to finish that one up and get it out of the UFO pile!

We had a great time, lots of good food, lots of laughs. But it's always nice to come home. I spent the evenings catching up here and doing some slow Sunday stitching. Can't think of a better way to end a great weekend!

Annapolis Valley Ex

Every year, our family spends a Saturday in mid August at the Exhibition in the valley! It's a tradition really, I remember as a very young child walking the grounds holding my daddy's hand checking out all the critters. One year in particular, I remember a man from one of the commercial buildings, giving us a little box full of chocolate ski-doos! You might know, my most vivid memory involves chocolate lol!!

My favourite parts of the day include the arts and crafts displays, that would be the quilts of course, and the ox hauls and horse pulls. These two quilts were my favourites this year. The traditional pieced one was absolutely beautiful with lots of scrappy fabrics.

And this more modern fun one was so well done, the stitching was exceptional and what a cute fun design.

And there are always beautiful hooked rugs on display too! I love them, and as I stand there and watch the ladies hooking away, I want to run right home and get my hooking out again! They make it look so effortless and relaxing! Oh my, so many projects, so little time!

These three were my favourite rugs of the day! The top one, got my vote for Viewers Choice award. As always, it was a great day!
